The problem is that stores don't care about the difference and label their stock "Ranchu/lionhead". They have competitions, judges and awards. They have bloodlines and proper husbandry is very important. These are the pure bred dogs of the goldfish world. Lionheads usually have more pronounced headgrowth.Ī ranchu has more exact standards, meaning that the tail has to be at a set angle, the back has to curve a certain way, the fins need to be coloured, etc. The back used to need to be straight, but the Chinese breeders have been changing this for a more ranchu style curve to the back. In a nutshell, lionheads have a wen, no dorsal fin, and double tails. It takes some time, but you do end up being able to tell the difference. ![]()
